This is the third in the Pasta Kidz series. Each book uses funny, quirky yet simple invented pasta language and vivid, beautiful illustrations to tell a unique story with a subtle moral message in an engaging way.
Pasta is a mealtime favourite in many households all over the world, and the lively and fun-packed Pasta Kidz series taps straight into the love of this Italian-turned-global failsafe food. The books are aimed at primary school aged children (up to and around 8 years old) and introduces them to different Pasta Kidz who teach them about developing friendships and accepting others for who they are regardless of their looks or background.
In each story the Pasta Kidz help each other, usually with their own individual Pasta Petz, and throughout the series we see how their personalities and friendships develop especially when encountering new challenges and characters in all shapes and sizes.
Bryony Supper, the creator of Pasta Kidz, trained as a professional actress, always playing comedy roles and has a wide range of experience from The Rocky Horror Picture Show to stand-up comedy and children’s television – writing all her own material. Now, using her natural talent for comedy, she has created up to forty The Pasta Kidz and Pasta Petz adventures and teamed up with incredible illustrator, Julian Bray to bring these fabulous inspired stories to life. (oh, and did I mention there is a Pasta Kidz Pastaball game?)
In this latest instalment of the Pasta Kidz series, The Boing Boing Bushes, we see Camilla Cannelloni and Felix Fusilli organise the Annual Pasta Games. But they are the only two kidz who turn up and even the naughty Pastaball seems to be hiding! So they decide the first game will be to see who can catch a Boing Boing Bush, but soon remember that “Boing Boing bushes are wild, so you must let them Boing free” and let it go. Then, out of nowhere there’s a “Padang PuMp! Padang PuMp!’ and we find out who took the Pastaball and who the other Pasta kidz have been hiding from. The big question is, will the Pasta Petz come and save the day?
The Pasta language was the biggest hit in our house, even with me! Its full of funny easily pronounced sounds, that are sure to illicit giggles from the reader whether they’re 6 or 60!
And with a handy ‘Pasta Vocabulary; in the back of the book, along with a fantastic ‘Meet the Kidz and Petz’ illustration really bring the story to life and I cant wait to read more books in the series and see what characters Bryony introduces to us next (I hear theres a very special icecream machine in Book 4 and we cant wait to read what happens.)
My daughter is 7 and enjoyed reading this book with me. She found the font easy to read and the spacing perfect in that the sentences flowed together but the text was not just one block of text which may overwhelm the child. Having one page of text and one beautifully illustrated page along side it helped to bring the story to life and engage my daughter in talking about the story and characters as we read together.
This book was entertaining, informative, fun to read and my daughter loved it; the fact that there is a moral message built in is an added bonus. It would make a fantastic addition to any home book collection, school or public library and I would highly recommend, not just this book, but the series as a whole.
